• Preventative Measures: Mildew tends to develop on wood that was already in substandard condition or when moisture is present. To prevent mildew, ensure that the wood is clean and freshly sanded if it has significant greyed areas. A rough surface can lead to greater oil and moisture absorption, resulting in extended drying times and potential mildew problems.
• Mildew Removal: If mildew does appear, it can be easily removed with household cleaners or soap. This cleaning process won't adversely affect the oil; in fact, it can help remove excess oil from the surface, which may contribute to the mildew issue.
• Cure in Dry Conditions: The most effective preventative measure for mildew is maintaining dry conditions. Once mildew is removed, the oil will cure properly, and in drier weather, mildew problems should not recur.
• Boiled Oil: Our boiled oil with driers is particularly effective for outdoor use because it dries quickly, hardening the wood surface and reducing moisture absorption. Less moisture means less mildew growth.
• Switching Oils: If mildew appears after using raw oil, you can clean it off and then treat the wood with boiled oil. Both oils are compatible, and this transition can help prevent further mildew growth.
