KingsFleet™ - Hemp Oil
INSTRUCTIONS:
Applying KingsFleet Hemp Oil to your woodworking projects is a straightforward yet methodical process that yields a durable, protective, and visually appealing finish. With its natural composition, hemp oil enhances the beauty of wood while offering a safe, eco-friendly solution. Here is a detailed, step-by-step guide to help you apply Hemp Oil for the best results:
Preparation:
- Select a Clean, Dry Work Area
- Make sure your workspace is clean, dry, and well-ventilated. Hemp oil has a very mild odor during application, but proper ventilation will help those who may be sensitive to smells. Lay down a drop cloth or plastic sheet to protect your surfaces from oil drips and spills.
-
Prepare the Wood Surface
- Sanding: If the wood surface is not already smooth, lightly sand it to remove rough spots. Start with medium-grit sandpaper (120-grit) and finish with fine-grit sandpaper (220-grit) for a smooth, even finish. Always sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid scratches.
- Cleaning: After sanding, remove all dust and debris using a tack cloth or damp cloth. Ensure the wood is dry before applying the hemp oil.
- Wood Condition: If your wood is especially dry or porous, lightly dampen the surface with water or apply a wood conditioner to help open the pores for better oil absorption.
- Protect Your Hands and Surrounding Areas
- Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the oil. Make sure to cover any surrounding areas that could get stained, as hemp oil can discolor fabrics and surfaces.
Application Process:
-
Apply the First Coat
- Pour the Oil: Pour a small amount of Hemp Oil onto a clean, lint-free cloth, rag, or soft brush. You don’t need to soak the cloth; simply dampen it with oil.
- Apply the Oil: Start at one edge of the wood and apply the oil in long, even strokes, following the direction of the wood grain. Work in manageable sections to ensure a smooth and even application. Cover all exposed wood areas with a thin layer of oil.
- Work in Sections: For large surfaces, divide the wood into smaller sections to avoid the oil drying too quickly before you can finish.
- Let the Oil Soak In
- Allow the oil to absorb into the wood for about 20-30 minutes. The exact time may vary depending on the wood’s porosity and humidity. If the wood begins to look dry or dull, apply more oil to the surface to ensure it fully soaks in.
- Wipe Off Excess Oil
- After the oil has had time to penetrate, use a clean, dry cloth to wipe off any excess oil that has not been absorbed. This step is crucial to avoid a sticky or uneven finish. Make sure to remove any pools or streaks of excess oil that could lead to an imperfect finish.
- Allow the First Coat to Dry
- Let the first coat of hemp oil dry for at least 24 hours. Drying time may vary depending on temperature and humidity, but the surface should feel dry to the touch before you proceed to the next coat.
Additional Coats (Optional but Recommended):
- Sand Between Coats (Optional)
- For a smoother, more refined finish, lightly sand the surface between coats. Use fine-grit sandpaper (around 320-grit) or fine steel wool to gently buff the surface. Be careful not to remove the oil, just smooth the surface for the next coat. After sanding, remove all dust with a tack cloth.
- Apply Additional Coats
- Apply a second or third coat of Pure Hemp Oil using the same method as the first. After wiping off excess oil, allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Generally, 2-3 coats will provide adequate protection and a rich finish, but more coats may be needed for high-use items like tabletops or furniture that requires extra durability.
Finishing Touches:
- Final Buffing (Optional)
- After the final coat has dried, you can buff the surface using a clean, dry cloth or fine steel wool to enhance the sheen and bring out the natural beauty of the wood. Buffing between coats and after the final coat will help achieve a polished, professional appearance.
- Curing Time
- Even once the surface feels dry to the touch, the oil will continue to cure and harden over the course of several days or even weeks. During this time, avoid heavy use of the surface, especially in humid environments.
- Final Cure Time: For optimal durability, allow the oil to fully cure for 1-2 weeks before heavy use, particularly on high-contact surfaces like countertops, tables, or cutting boards.
Maintenance and Care:
- Ongoing Care
- To keep the finish looking its best, periodically reapply hemp oil as needed. This will help maintain the protective layer and nourish the wood. High-use items such as cutting boards or furniture may need oiling every 6-12 months, depending on usage.
Tips for Success:
- Thinning: If the hemp oil feels too thick or if you'd like it to penetrate deeper into the wood, you can thin it with a small amount of mineral spirits.
- Avoid Over-application: Always wipe off excess oil after each coat to prevent a sticky or uneven finish. Applying too much oil can lead to pooling and uneven absorption.
- Ventilation: Make sure your workspace is well-ventilated, especially during the drying process, to ensure proper air circulation and avoid inhaling any fumes.
